HW-4 Horizontal Warning Gate

GENERAL: The warning gate shall be Model HW-4, as manufactured by B&B Roadway, (888) 560-2060.

APPLICATIONS: The gate shall be designed for use as a warning, traffic control and access control gate. The gate shall be explicitly designed for traffic control on HOV and reversible lanes and similar applications.

HOUSING: The operating mechanism and main control components shall be contained in a heavy duty weatherproof housing. The housing shall be constructed of 0.250 “(6.4mm) carbon steel hot dip galvanized after fabrication [option: 5052 and 6061 or 6063 aluminum with natural or anodized finish, as specified]. Galvanized exterior surfaces shall be painted aluminum. All fasteners shall be corrosion resistant.

Large access doors shall provide access on both sides of the operator [OPTION: An additional access door shall be provided on the end of the housing opposite the capstan, when specified.] Doors shall be made of same type material as housing (i.e. galvanized steel or aluminum) and finished to match housing. Doors shall be mounted on brass alloy strap hinges. Hinges shall be of the slip-off type and shall have stainless steel pins. Door handles shall use a vise action to compress a neoprene bulb-type gasket to seal the door openings [OPTIONS: Door handles shall be available in the following styles: T-handle, T-handle with key lock, hex key operated, round key operated, T-handle 3-point latch with padlock provision. Additional styles may be available upon request.]

MOUNTING: The gate shall be fixed to a suitable foundation, as specified by the project engineer, using four 3/4” (20mm) diameter minimum anchor bolts. The gate housing base shall provide four 1.00” (25mm) holes on a 14” (356mm) x 52.5” (1333mm) pattern.

ARM: The gate arm shall be 4” (102mm) square, 6005-T5 aluminum extruded tubing. [option: with 3” square end section of high-strength UV-resistant fiberglass or 3” square extruded aluminum.] Maximum arm length shall be 40’ (12m) from the centerline of the pivot. Stainless steel truss cables shall be furnished with longer arms at the discretion of the manufacturer. Front and rear arm surfaces shall be covered with red and white high intensity reflective sheeting. Stripes shall be 16” (406mm) wide, and vertical according to MUTCD. [OPTION: alternative arm designs shall be provided to customer’s specifications, when required.]

ARM BASE: The arm base shall be designed with a shear pin mechanism to minimize damage to the gate and vehicle in the event of a collision. In the event of an impact against the arm, the shear pin shall break, allowing the arm to swing out of traffic under minimal pressure. At approximately 75 to 80 degrees, a spring-loaded latch shall engage, preventing the arm from swinging back into traffic. Arm shall be easily reset by manually releasing the latch, rotating the arm back into position and replacing the shear pin.

ARM MOUNTING BRACKET: Arm shall be mounted to the capstan using a hot dip galvanized steel mounting bracket. Bracket shall be designed to enable the arm height to be adjusted. Finish shall be painted aluminum.

CAPSTAN: The capstan sleeve shall be 6” (152mm) outside diameter. Capstan shaft shall turn in relubricable ball and tapered roller bearings.

OPERATING MECHANISM: The warning arm shall pivot in the horizontal plane via a mechanical 4-bar linkage. The linkage shall utilize cranks keyed to the capstan and transmission shaft and an adjustable connecting rod between a pair of self-aligning spherical rod ends. The connecting rod shall be of 1” (25mm) diameter AISI 4150. The linkage shall be driven by a fully enclosed, double reduction, all gear speed reducer. Gear ratio used shall produce an operation time of approximately 11 seconds.

The velocity of the arm shall follow a sinusoidal pattern to provide smooth operation. The arm shall begin and end its full motion path with zero velocity and accelerate smoothly to maximum velocity at mid-travel.

Standard swing shall be 90 degrees. [OPTION: An adjustable crank shall be provided to permit swing angles other than 90 degrees. Please consult manufacturer.]

MOTOR: The motor voltage and phase shall be as specified by the customer. The motor horsepower shall be as recommended by the gate manufacturer to suit arm type and configuration specified by the customer. The motor shall be a C-face design and shall be mounted directly to the transmission. The motor shall be instantly reversing and overload protected.

BRAKING MECHANISM: The motor shall be equipped with a solenoid-release, automatic brake. The brake shall have a manual release to permit manual operation of the gate during emergencies or setup.

HANDCRANK: A handcrank shall be provided with each gate to facilitate manual operation of the gate.

LIMIT SWITCH: The gate limit switch assembly shall be a self-contained unit. The assembly shall provide 8 independent SPDT control switches. Switches shall be rated for 15 amps, 480 VAC. Switches shall be controlled by individually adjustable cams. The limit switch assembly design shall permit adjustment of all cams with the gate in any position. The limit switch assembly shall have a removable cover to help prevent accidental contact with switch terminals. Shaft, cams, bushings and housing pieces shall be of non-ferrous corrosion resistant materials.

SAFETY SWITCHES, TERMINAL BLOCKS AND WIRING: A manual disconnect switch shall be provided, pre-wired at the factory to break the main motor leads, to protect personnel during service. A handcrank safety switch shall be provided to prevent powered actuation of the gate during manual operation. [OPTION: Safety switches shall be installed and set at the factory to break the control circuit when either access door is opened. Door safety switches shall have a pull-to-override feature for test operation and shall automatically reset when doors are closed.] Control components and terminal blocks shall be mounted inside an electrical enclosure mounted facing the roadway side access opening, except where custom components required by the customer prevent this arrangement. Pressure-type, modular terminal blocks shall be fully labeled and clearly coded to wiring diagrams. All control wiring shall be cleared coded to wiring diagrams and shall terminate at the terminal block. Connections to screw-type terminals shall have lugs. Conductors shall be type XHHW #14 AWG stranded, minimum.

ACCESSORIES AND MODIFICATIONS: All common accessories and modifications shall be available. Custom modifications and accessories shall be available through coordination with manufacturer.

WARRANTY: A 1 year warranty shall cover the gate and related equipment against defective material and components. Manufacturer shall furnish replacement parts for a minimum of 10 years. Replacement parts for standard components shall normally be available within 1 working day. Lamps, fuses and other components designed for a life less than 1 year shall be covered for the rated life of the component or the warranty period of the component manufacturer.

HW-2 Horizontal Warning Gate

GENERAL: The warning gate shall be Model HW-2, as manufactured by B&B Roadway, (888) 560-2060.

APPLICATIONS: The gate shall be designed for use as a warning, traffic control and access control gate. The gate shall be explicitly designed for traffic control on HOV, reversible lanes and similar applications, pedestrian gate operator, parking lot access control gate operator, or any medium duty traffic control or warning installation. (When a heavier duty swing-type operator is required, refer to the HW-4.)

HOUSING: The operating mechanism and main control components shall be contained in a heavy duty weatherproof housing. The housing shall be sturdily constructed of carbon steel shapes and plate, hot dip galvanized after fabrication [option: 5052 and 6061 or 6063 aluminum with natural or anodized finish, as specified]. Galvanized exterior surfaces shall be painted aluminum. All fasteners shall be corrosion resistant.

Weather-sealed access doors shall be provided to accommodate service of the gate and mechanism. Doors shall be made of same type material as housing (i.e. galvanized steel or aluminum) and finished to match the housing. [option: A rear access door may be included if desired by the customer when access to one side of the housing is blocked.]

MOUNTING: The gate shall be fixed to a suitable foundation, as specified by the project engineer, using four 1/2” (12.7mm) diameter minimum anchor bolts. The gate housing base shall provide four .625” (15.9mm) holes. [OPTION: custom mounting patterns can be provided.]

ARM or PANEL: The gate shall be equipped with either an arm (typical for vehicular traffic control) or a panel (typical for pedestrian traffic control).

Arm shall be 4” (102mm) square, 6005-T5 aluminum extruded tubing. [OPTION 1: with 3” square end section of high- strength UV-resistant fiberglass or 3” square extruded aluminum.] Maximum arm length shall be 24’ (7.3m) from the centerline of the pivot. Front and rear arm surfaces shall be covered with red and white high intensity reflective sheeting. Stripes shall be 16” (406mm) wide, and vertical according to MUTCD. [OPTION: alternative arm designs shall be provided to customer’s specifications, when required.]

Panel shall be constructed of 2” (50mm) square aluminum outer frame filled with smaller round aluminum vertical bars spaced approximately 4”-6” (100-153mm) on center. Panel height and width shall be as shown on plans. Maximum panel length and height shall depend on panel design and overall size and weight. Manufacturer shall be consulted for panels exceeding 12’ (3.6m) in length. [OPTION: A strip of high intensity reflective sheeting, pre-striped alternating red and white, shall be placed along top edge of frame, when specified.] [OPTION: Custom panel design shall be provided when specified.]

ARM/PANEL BASE: When requested, the arm/panel base shall be designed with a shear pin mechanism to minimize damage to the gate and vehicle in the event of a collision. Arm or panel shall be designed to be easily reset by replacing the shear pin.

MOUNTING BRACKET: Arm or panel shall be mounted to the capstan using a hot dip galvanized steel mounting bracket. Two brackets shall be provided for mounting of panels. Bracket shall be designed to enable the arm or panel height to be adjusted. Finish shall be painted aluminum.

CAPSTAN: The capstan shaft shall not be less than 2.50” (63.5mm) outside diameter. Capstan shaft shall turn in relubricable ball and tapered roller bearings.

OPERATING MECHANISM: The warning arm or panel shall pivot in the horizontal plane via a mechanical 4-bar linkage. The linkage shall utilize cranks keyed to the capstan and transmission shaft and an adjustable connecting rod between a pair of self-aligning spherical rod ends. The connecting rod shall be of minimum 3/4” (19mm) diameter AISI 4150. The linkage shall be driven by a fully enclosed, double reduction, all gear speed reducer. Gear ratio used shall produce an operation time of approximately 8-13 seconds. Gear ratio (and operation time) shall be selected by the manufacturer to suit the weight and length of the arm or panel.

VW-M3 Vertical Warning Gate

GENERAL: The warning gate shall be Model VW-M3, as manufactured by B&B Roadway, (888) 560-2060.

APPLICATIONS: The gate shall be designed for use as a warning, traffic control and access control gate where manual operation is desired for closure of up to two lanes.

GATE STAND and MOUNTING PROVISIONS: Gate stand shall use heavy structural steel [option: aluminum], welded in a rigid configuration. Entire stand shall be hot dip galvanized after fabrication. The base shall be mounted to a foundation specified by the project engineer with four ¾” diameter by 12″ long L-shaped anchor bolts or alternate anchor bolt as specified by the project engineer. The manufacturer shall provide standard anchor bolts and template.

SIDE ARM CHANNELS and CROSSMEMBER: Steel, hot-dip galvanized side arm channels and cross members shall form a sturdy mounting frame to support the arm. The cross member section shall provide for mounting of the arm base.

LATCHING / LOCKING PROVISIONS: The design shall permit 90 degree vertical rotation of the arm. The arm shall latch in both the open and closed positions. Provision for padlocking shall be provided in both the raised and lowered positions.

BEARINGS: Permanently lubricated, bronze spherical bearings shall be provided as standard equipment for smooth, reliable operation.

ARM: The gate arm shall be 4″ square (102mm), 6005-T6 aluminum extruded tubing. [option: with a 3″ square end section of high-strength UV-resistant fiberglass tip section.] Maximum arm length shall be 30′ (9.1m) from the centerline of the pivot. Front and rear arm surfaces shall be covered with red and white high intensity reflective sheeting. Stripes shall be 16″ (406mm) wide, and vertical according to MUTCD. Remaining exposed arm surfaces shall be painted white.

ARM BASE: The arm base shall be designed with a shear pin mechanism to reduce damage to the gate and vehicle in the event of a collision. In the event of an impact, the shear pin shall break, allowing the arm to swing approximately 85 to 90 degrees. At the full open position, a spring-loaded latch shall engage, preventing the arm from swinging back into traffic. To reset the arm: manually release the latch, rotate the arm back into position, and replace the shear pin.

ACCESSORIES AND MODIFICATIONS: All common accessories and modifications shall be available. Custom modifications and accessories shall be available through coordination with manufacturer.

VW-5 Vertical Warning Gate

GENERAL: The warning gate shall be Model VW-5, as manufactured by B&B Roadway, (256) 332-4035.

APPLICATIONS: The gate shall be designed for use as a warning, traffic control and access control gate.
The gate shall be explicitly designed for traffic control on movable bridges and similar applications.

HOUSING: The operating mechanism and main control components shall be contained in a weatherproof housing. The housing shall be constructed of .375″ (9.5 mm) carbon steel, hot dip galvanized after fabrication. Exterior surfaces shall be painted aluminum. All fasteners shall be corrosion resistant. Arm assembly mounting design shall be fully gasketed and shaft openings shall incorporate O-ring seals.

OPERATING MECHANISM: The warning arm shall pivot in the vertical plane via a mechanical 4-bar linkage. The linkage shall utilize cranks keyed to the main arm shaft and transmission shaft and an adjustable connecting rod between a pair of self-aligning spherical rod ends. The connecting rod shall be of AISI 4150. The linkage shall be driven by a fully enclosed, double reduction, worm gear speed reducer. Gear ratio used shall produce an operation time of 13 seconds. An auxiliary crank shall be used, paired with the transmission crank, to reduce the load on the transmission and to better balance and stabilize the load on the housing and mounting structure. The auxiliary crank shall be mounted in a permanently lubricated bronze bearing. The velocity of the arm shall follow a sinusoidal pattern to provide smooth operation. The arm shall begin and end its full motion path with zero velocity and accelerate smoothly to maximum velocity at mid-travel.

TRANSMISSION: The mechanism linkage shall be driven by a fully enclosed, heavy duty worm gear, double reduction speed reducer. the transmission shall have an occasional momentary peak load rating of not less than 30,000 inch-pounds. The output shaft shall be 2″ in diameter. gear ratio used shall produce an operation time of approximately 13 seconds [option: contact factory for other speed options].

TORQUE LIMITER: For installations requiring heavy arms and/or high winds, a heavy duty torque limiter shall be provided to limit the torque transmitted to the operating mechanism due to excessive wind loads, physical obstruction to the arm or instant reversing of heavy arm assemblies. the torque limiter shall be capable of being set anywhere within a range of 10,000 to 75,000 in-lbs torque. each torque limiter shall be factory set for the load recommended by the manufacturer, based on installation requirements. each torque limiter shall be adjusted and tested at the factory, under over-load conditions, for a minimum of 5 minutes to verify the setting. the gate limit switch assembly shall be driven from the output side of the torque limiter so that slippage of the torque limiter will have no effect on the limit settings.

DOORS: Front and rear doors shall be mounted on full cross straps. hinges shall be of the slip-off type and shall have stainless steel pins. door latches, two per door, shall use a vise action to compress a neoprene bulb-type gasket to seal the door openings. [Option: alternate door latches may be provided upon request.] [Option: a padlockable strap shall be provided suitable for heavy duty standard padlocks or shackleless padlocks (padlocks provided by others).]

ARM MOUNTING TUBES: A pair of carbon steel rectangular tubes, hot dip galvanized, painted aluminum, shall be rigidly affixed to the ends of the main arm shaft. The tubes shall be offset to place the arm centerline at 44″ (1118mm) above the housing base. [OPTION: Tubes shall be offset to provide a custom arm centerline height.] The channels and a steel crossmember shall provide a sturdy mount for the arm, arm base assembly and counterweights.

COUNTERWEIGHTS: At the rear end of the side arm tubes, hot dip galvanized counterweights shall be mounted to balance the arm. Counterweights shall be sectional and shall permit approximately 10% adjustment.

Remaining exposed surfaces shall be painted white.

VW-2 Vertical Warning Gate

APPLICATIONS: The gate shall be designed for use as a warning, traffic control and access control gate. The gate shall be explicitly designed for traffic control on movable bridges, HOV and reversible lanes, industrial/commercial access control and similar applications.

HOUSING: The operating mechanism and main control components shall be contained in a weatherproof housing. The housing shall be constructed of .188” (4.8mm) carbon steel, hot dip galvanized after fabrication. Exterior surfaces shall be painted aluminum. All fasteners shall be corrosion resistant. Shaft openings shall incorporate O-ring seals. Access panels shall be bolt-on and fitted with a gasket.

MOUNTING: The gate shall be fixed to a suitable foundation, as specified by the project engineer, using four 1/2” (13mm) diameter minimum anchor bolts. The gate housing base shall provide four 3/4” (19mm) holes, spaced 9 3⁄4“ (248mm) x 17 3⁄4” (450mm).

ARM: The gate arm shall be 4” (102mm) square, 6005-T5 aluminum extruded tubing. [option: with 3” square end section of high-strength UV-resistant fiberglass or 3” square extruded aluminum.] Maximum arm length shall be 24’ (7.3m) from the centerline of the housing. Front and rear arm surfaces shall be covered with alternating red and white high intensity reflective sheeting. Stripes shall be 16” (406mm) wide, and vertical according to MUTCD. Remaining exposed surfaces shall be painted white.

Truss cables shall not be used for any length arm.

ARM BASE: The arm base shall be designed with a shear pin mechanism to minimize damage to the gate and vehicle in the event of a collision. In the event of an impact, the shear pin shall break, allowing the arm to swing approximately 60 to 80 degrees. At the full open position, a spring-loaded latch shall engage, preventing the arm from swinging back into traffic. Arm shall be easily reset by manually releasing the latch, rotating the arm back into position and replacing the shear pin.

ARM MOUNTING CHANNELS: A pair of carbon steel channels, hot dip galvanized, painted aluminum, shall be rigidly affixed to the ends of the main arm shaft. The channels and a steel crossmember shall provide a sturdy mount for the arm, arm base assembly and counterweights.

COUNTERWEIGHTS: At the rear end of the side arm channels, hot dip galvanized counterweights shall be mounted to balance the arm. Counterweights shall be sectional and shall permit at least 10% adjustment.

ARM SHAFT: The main arm shaft shall be of 1 1⁄2” (32mm) diameter AISI 4150 with a minimum tensile strength of 140,000 psi. The shaft shall be mounted in heavy duty relubricable ball bearings.

OPERATING MECHANISM: The warning arm shall pivot in the vertical plane via a mechanical 4-bar linkage. The linkage shall utilize cranks keyed to the main arm shaft and transmission shaft and an adjustable connecting rod between a pair of self-aligning spherical rod ends. The connecting rod shall be of 3⁄4” (19mm) diameter AISI 4150. The linkage shall be driven by a fully enclosed, double reduction, worm gear speed reducer. Gear ratio used shall produce an operation time of 8 seconds or 11 seconds, as specified, or as recommended by manufacturer if not specified. [Option: consult manufacturer for other available operation times.]

The velocity of the arm shall follow a sinusoidal pattern to provide smooth operation. The arm shall begin and end its full motion path with zero velocity and accelerate smoothly to maximum velocity at mid-travel.

MOTOR: The motor voltage and phase shall be as specified by the customer. The motor horsepower shall be 1⁄2 hp. The motor shall be a C-face design and shall be mounted directly to the transmission. The motor shall be instantly reversing and overload protected.

BRAKING MECHANISM: The motor shall be equipped with a solenoid-release, automatic brake. The brake shall have a manual release lever to permit manual operation of the gate during emergencies or setup.

LIMIT SWITCH: The gate limit switch assembly shall be a self-contained unit. The assembly shall provide 4 independent SPDT control switches. Switches shall be rated for 15 amps, 480 VAC. Switches shall be controlled by individually adjustable cams. The limit switch assembly design shall permit adjustment of all cams with the gate in any position. The limit switch assembly shall have a removable cover to help prevent accidental contact with switch terminals. Shaft, cams, bushings and housing pieces shall be of non-ferrous corrosion resistant materials.

SAFETY SWITCHES, TERMINAL BLOCKS AND WIRING: A manual disconnect switch shall be provided, pre-wired at the factory to break the main motor leads, to protect personnel during service. Safety switches shall be installed and set at the factory to break the control circuit when an access panel is opened. Safety switches shall have a pull-to-override feature for test operation and shall automatically reset when doors are closed. Pressure-type, modular terminal blocks shall be fully labeled and clearly coded to wiring diagrams. All control wiring shall be clearly coded to wiring diagrams and shall terminate at the terminal block. Conductors shall be type XHHW #14 AWG stranded, minimum.

ACCESSORIES AND MODIFICATIONS: All common accessories and modifications shall be available. Custom modifications and accessories shall be available through coordination with manufacturer.

WARRANTY: A 1 year warranty shall cover the gate and related equipment against defective material and components. Manufacturer shall furnish replacement parts for a minimum of 10 years. Replacement parts for standard components shall normally be available within 1 working day. Lamps, fuses and other components designed for a life less than 1 year shall be covered for the rated life of the component or the warranty period of the component manufacturer.

VW-4 Vertical Warning Gate

GENERAL: The warning gate shall be Model VW-4, as manufactured by B&B Roadway, (888) 560-2060.

APPLICATIONS: The gate shall be designed for use as a warning, traffic control and access control gate. The gate shall be explicitly designed for traffic control on movable bridges, HOV and reversible lanes and similar applications.

HOUSING: The operating mechanism and main control components shall be contained in a weatherproof housing. The housing shall be constructed of .188” (4.8mm) carbon steel [option: aluminum], hot dip galvanized after fabrication [steel only]. Exterior surfaces shall be painted aluminum. All fasteners shall be corrosion resistant. Arm shaft openings shall incorporate O-ring seals.

Front and rear access doors shall be mounted on full cross bronze straps. Hinges shall be of the slip-off type and shall have stainless steel pins. Door handles, two per door, shall use a vise action to compress a neoprene bulb-type gasket to seal the door openings. [option: Alternate door latches may be provided upon request.] [option: A padlockable strap shall be provided suitable for heavy duty standard padlocks or shackleless padlocks, provided by others.]

MOUNTING: The gate shall be fixed to a suitable foundation, as specified by the project engineer, using four 3/4” (20mm) diameter minimum anchor bolts. The gate housing base shall provide four 1.00” (25mm) holes on a 20 1/4” (514mm) square pattern. (Mounting holes in standard base shall be slotted to allow for a 19 1/2” x 20 1/4” (495mm x 514mm) mounting pattern to accommodate some existing bolt patterns.)

ARM: The gate arm shall be 4” (102mm) square, 6005-T5 aluminum extruded tubing. [option: with 3” square end section of high-strength UV-resistant fiberglass or 3” square extruded aluminum.] Maximum arm length shall be 40’ (12m) from the centerline of the housing. Stainless steel truss cables and a damping type bumper rod shall be furnished with longer arms at the discretion of the manufacturer. Front and rear arm surfaces shall be covered with alternating red and white high intensity reflective sheeting. Stripes shall be 16” (406mm) wide, and vertical according to MUTCD. Remaining exposed surfaces shall be painted white.

On longer arms or when specified by the customer, an auxiliary crank shall be used, paired with the transmission crank, to reduce the load on the transmission and to better balance and stabilize the load on the housing and mounting structure. The auxiliary crank shall be mounted in a permanently lubricated bronze bearing.

HANDCRANK: A handcrank shall be provided with each gate to facilitate manual operation of the gate.

LIMIT SWITCH: The gate limit switch assembly shall be a self-contained unit. The assembly shall provide 8 independent SPDT control switches. Switches shall be rated for 15 amps at 480 VAC. Switches shall be controlled by individually adjustable cams. The limit switch assembly design shall permit adjustment of all cams with the gate in any position. The limit switch assembly shall have a removable cover to help prevent accidental contact with switch terminals. Shaft, cams, bushings and housing pieces shall be of non-ferrous corrosion resistant materials.

Control components and terminal blocks shall be mounted inside an electrical enclosure mounted facing the rear side access opening, except where custom components required by the customer prevent this arrangement. Pressure-type, modular terminal blocks shall be fully labeled and clearly coded to wiring diagrams. All control wiring shall be clearly coded to wiring diagrams and shall terminate at the terminal block. Connections to screw-type terminals shall have lugs. Conductors shall be type XHHW #14 AWG stranded, minimum. Wiring shall be run in conduit where practical.

MU-605 Vertical Warning Gate

GENERAL: The manually operated safety gate shall be type MU-605, as manufactured by B&B Roadway, (888) 560-2060. These specifications are the minimum that shall be acceptable. The gate shall be of the standard vertical to horizontal arm type.

APPLICATIONS: The model MU-605 shall typically be used as a manually operated road closure gate. Typical applications of this gate include emergency road closure during “white-out” conditions or similar situations where hazardous driving conditions exist. When an automatic safety gate is required, refer to the VW-2 or the VW-4 warning gate.

GATE PIVOT STAND ASSEMBLY: The gate pivot stand assembly shall consist of the gate pivot, the pivot sleeve, and arm guides. It shall be fabricated from ASTM-A36 steel channel, angle, and flat bar and hot dipped galvanized after fabrication per ASTM-A123. The entire assembly shall be corrosion resistant.

The gate pivot sleeve shall be constructed to fit an 8” base [option: 10” base], standard steel luminaire pole. Gates may be adapted to fit other pole sizes, as coordinated with manufacturer. The sleeve shall mount on this pole at a height determined by the installer to meet job requirements.Six 1/2” bolts shall be used to securely attach the pivot sleeve to the luminaire pole. The gate pivot shall rotate 90° and shall be padlockable in the vertical position. The pivot sleeve shall include a mounting pad to allow an optional worm gear winch to be attached for handcrank operation.

The gate pivot shall be designed to mount on the pivot sleeve and freely rotate through 90° of travel. The gate pivot shall be padlockable in the fully open (raised) position; padlocks shall be supplied by the installer to match existing requirements for keys. Eight 3/4″ A325 galvanized bolts shall be used to assemble the gate pivot around the pivot sleeve. The gate pivot shall include a base to allow the attachment of the shear pin base arm.

ARM BASE: A shear pin base is standard for rectangular aluminum / fiberglass and aluminum arms. When excessive force is applied to the gate arm, the pin shall shear. Available shear pin bases include, but are not limited to, the following:

“Drop Free” Style – this will allow the arm to swing 45° horizontally, out of traffic, and drop free of the gate stand. This device is designed to minimize damage to the impacting vehicle, vehicle’s occupant, gate stand assembly, and the luminaire pole. If the arm is not damaged beyond use, one person may replace it with a minimum of effort in a few minutes. Typical, partially-threaded stainless steel bolts may be used as a replacement for the shear pin.

“Permanent Pivot” Style – this style uses a shear pin base that is permanently attached to the gate stand. If the arm is not damaged beyond use, one person may replace it with a minimum of effort in a few minutes. Typical, partially-threaded stainless steel bolts may be used as a replacement for the shear pin.

GATE ARM: The roadway arm shall be constructed according to the customer’s specifications. Available arm types shall include, but not limited to, the following:

Aluminum / Fiberglass combination – This lightweight, durable arm shall be fabricated from special high strength rectangular fiberglass and 6061-T6 or 6063-T5 aluminum tubing.

Rectangular Aluminum – This arm shall be fabricated from high strength 6061-T6 or 6063-T5 aluminum tubing.

Gate arms shall be covered on two sides with alternating red and white high intensity grade reflective sheeting. Stripes shall be 16” (152mm) wide, and vertical according to MUTCD. Other striping materials and colors shall be used when specified. Arms shall be constructed from rectangular tubing, maximizing the reflective surface facing the traffic.

A spring loaded, adjustable length, roadway bumper shall be used on longer arms, as recommended by the manufacturer. This bumper shall be constructed from corrosion resistant materials and shall pivot to remain vertical throughout the entire movement of the gate arm.

QUALITY ASSURANCE: The manufacturer of the traffic control gate shall have a minimum of 5 years experience in the manufacture of industrial gate operators and barriers. All gates shall be individually tested and inspected at time of final assembly.
